Rooted in medieval Scandinavian culture, Tafl Viking Chess presents a strategy board game once comparable to chess in Scandinavian society. Its variants change the board size across 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, and 13x13 layouts, so positioning plans must adjust before the first move is made. The central objective also shifts by ruleset: the defending side may need to bring the king either to the edge or to a corner of the board. The turn order gives the attacking black pieces the first move, followed by alternating turns. Pieces move vertically or horizontally, making lane control and blocking routes central to the match. Capture pressure around the king varies as well, since some variants require encirclement from two sides while others require four.
